Learner-Centered Instruction

The spectrum of learning experiences in the kindergarten classroom integrates MATHEMATICS, READING, WRITING, SPEAKING AND LISTENING to support active literacy development.  Instruction ranges from individual and small group to large group interactions allowing individual explorations at centers and opportunities within collaborative groups. In the classroom, students are actively involved in hands-on investigations while the teacher serves as the facilitator of their learning. wpe5.jpg (9381 bytes)

Curriculum resource materials support the integration of all content areas into instruction. Curriculum may also include the utilization of community resources, such as special productions, guest presenters, and local field trips.  Art, music, technology and phys. ed. are integrated into the daily curriculum and may be supplemented through work with specialists.

Learner-Centered Assessment

In this learner-centered assessment environment, every student has the opportunity to reach maximum potential. Each child is assessed through daily activities, and instruction is continually modified to address individual student growth. The "Primary Assessment of Language Arts and Mathematics" (PALM) is used for evaluation and assessment.

Materials and resources are critical elements in the support and success of performance-based instruction and assessment. The students' interactions with emerging and expanding readers and mathematics manipulatives enable the teacher to assess student progress and adjust instruction. Interactions with science materials and participation in social studies experiences ensure students are well-prepared for later academic requirements.
